Gander River Tours operate in Moose Management Area (MMA) twenty three (23) in central Newfoundland. Area 23 is one of the only areas of Newfoundland that has only one outfitter. Due to the location of the lodge, there is very little Moose hunting pressure from local hunters. We hunt along the Gander River system which is one of Newfoundland's greatest Atlantic Salmon Rivers and moose hunters that "tag out" early enjoy their days pondering the waters of this unique and pristine river system (Fall hook & release until October 7th). Moose hunting generally takes place a short distance from our lodge. However, on occasion we may find ourselves moose hunting at one of our outpost camps for a day or two. (There is a charge for helicopter time should one wish to hunt at our outpost camps) Usually hunted less frequently, these areas offer expanded opportunities for our moose hunting guest. Depending on your patience and sometimes "luck" you may end up tagging an above average bull moose. The moose hunting *success rates at our lodge has been consistent at around 80% for the past number of years. Our guides are professional and experienced moose hunters themselves and have a great knowledge of the moose hunting country. They use proven moose hunting techniques including the "call" during mating season to put you within shot of the animal of your choice. In addition, they will take proper care of your meat and cape once you have made your kill. The black powder and rifle season opens for big game hunting in Newfoundland the second Saturday of September. The season for bow hunting begins two weeks prior to the rifle season.
