Salmon Fishing Newfoundland

The closely monitored Gander River as been internationally known as one of the World's best Atlantic Salmon Fishing destinations for many years. The Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), in cooperation with the Gander River Management Association, as helped preserve the stocks and maintain its "World Class" status.

Atlantic Salmon River Classification

The river is a Class One (1) river according to the criteria set by DFO. It is located in zone four (4) of DFO's zoned areas and large specimens of Atlantic Salmon are angled here annually. Being one of Newfoundland's largest (223 kms from its headwaters), as given the Gander River an advantage as it continues to meet its spawning limits year after year.

Gander River Tours offers sport fishing for Atlantic Salmon and Brook Trout from their prime location on the banks of the Gander River. We have a short but good season for brook trout, running from mid May to mid June. And if hunting is in your best interest, hunting and fishing combinations is their specialty.

Women anglers are encouraged since the lodge and guest camps are ideally suited with all of the comforts of modern facilities. In addition, fishing is done primarily from boat and the guides will place you the right distance from the pool depending on your casting strength. This is also a great advantage for elderly sports fishermen who no longer has the strength and stamina to stand in the river and maneuver the rocks.

The Guides, which are all experienced fisher persons, know the river as well as anyone. From their childhood days to present they have fished the waters of the Gander River. Through trial and error they have established the best pools, flies and techniques for landing that trophy Atlantic Salmon.
