The word "Caribou" is of Aboriginal descent and means shoveler or pawer. This describes the habits of the caribou as it shovels snow with its hooves in search of lichens (food) in the long winter months of Northern Canada. Newfoundland's Woodland Caribou herd is the world's southernmost herd. Hunting Caribou in Newfoundland Canada is very appealing to non-resident hunters since the success rates are among the highest anywhere (over 90%) and most outfitters offer discount rates when combined with Moose and Black Bear hunts. Our caribou hunts are done at a fly in tent camp with only 2 hunters per week. Unlike moose, caribou are native to the island of Newfoundland and healthy herds of these nomadic big game animals, exist throughout the province. Wildlife biologist estimate the total population of about 90,000 strong. Gander River Tours has a limited number of caribou licences so its important to book your caribou hunt early. |
