Being located on the Gander River System in Central Newfoundland has given Gander River Tours an advantage in the harvest of Black Bears. This area is historically known to produce a good number of Black Bears annually. Although Newfoundland is not known for great densities of Black Bear (10,000 on the Island), it is known to have some of the "World's Largest". Typical Spring Black Bears weigh in at 275 - 350 pounds, but you may luck out and get one in the 400 pounds plus range. If your really lucky, you may hunt that trophy Black Bear that everyone wants. Spring-Black Bear hunts are conducted on intermittent weeks at Gander River Tours permitting only three hunts per season. A "time-out" for the Black Bear in between hunting weeks has proved to make the bears return more frequently and helps them become less cautious around the baits. In addition, it helps protect the healthy Black Bear population around the hunting lodges. Gander
